In October 2016, the Canadian Tamils’ Humanitarian Association (CTHA) hosted a tremendously successful clothing and toy drive. The objective was to collect donations to send back to people in need in the underdeveloped rural communities of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. The collected items would be redistributed to families struggling with the hardships of poverty.
It was heart-warming to see our local community come out to support such an initiative. We managed to collect enough items to fill over 60 boxes with good quality reading material, stuffed toys, puzzles, eyeglasses, bags, purses, school stationery, and various articles of clothing. Non-perishable food items were also collected to be donated to the local food bank.
The boxes were packaged and shipped on the same day to ensure the materials reached their final destination with no delay. This could not have been possible without our amazing group of volunteers. Many rose to the occasion and came in with family and friends to sort through all the items, filter the materials, label, and pack the suitable items into boxes. These donations went a long way to serve the families, children and elderly who reside in some of the most neglected villages of Sri Lanka.
