Land for this home was procured from the Government, and in 2012 the new building construction started with the help of several non-governmental organizations. However, when we visited in 2015 construction had been halted due to lack of funds. Canadian Tamils agreed to complete the project and generously donated SL RS 3,500,000. (CAD $35,000) The building is near completion and scheduled to open in May of 2017.
The girls’ home provides impoverished orphaned girls with basic needs such as a secure shelter and healthy food, and also offers hope for the future through education. There are about 67 girls living in this home, aged between 5 and 16 years.
